This Affordable Housing Solution Just Could Work

Government can’t do this. Frankly, governments can’t do much when it comes to solving the housing “crisis”. The problem is they think they can or want you to think they can if you would just vote for them. Here’s a solution that isn’t a government one, that has worked in other countries with a little twist.

1. Never let the government create or manage affordable housing. Like most things governments do, they will mess it up. It will cost billions more than it should and whatever they do won’t work.

2. Put the solution in the hands of landlords. Yes, you heard me landlords. Those with 5 duplexes up to Riet’s with thousands of apartments.

3. For every 10 units (just an example) require one to be affordable for that area. Say $1,000 a month in Toronto all in.

4. If Landlords agree to participate their other 9 units are no longer under any type of rent control. Landlords will be able to raise rent-to-market rates 12 months from the date they enroll in the program.

5. Government only must keep a record of those properties or landlords that participate.

6. The program would be voluntary. Property owners do not have to participate.

7. Those that can pay will be subsidizing the rent for those who cannot. It may be 1-5 or 1-7 depending on the city or province.

There are many reasons why this would never be proposed by anyone in government. Landlords would be leery. That usually means it’s a great solution. No one is truly satisfied with the deal but it’s a start. What’s the harm in trying?
