Cataract Surgery Investments

Hard to See any Opportunity

In partnership with

After completing my cataract surgery, I am keen to investigate possible investments in the area.

My experience in London, Ontario, was spectacular. The clinic was run in a very organized and common-sense manner. I went in for the evaluation and was then given my choice as to when I wanted to have the procedure completed. I was ushered into the prep area on the chosen date, meeting with my pre-operative nurse, Anesthesiologist Assistant, and post-operative nurse. I was on my way home in about 3 hours with repaired cataracts and new lens implants.

Within 24 hours I was back to normal with no pain and incredible new vision. I wanted to take a closer look at this industry and see if there is a great investment waiting.

It didn’t take long to learn that the publicly traded companies are unable to meet our initial screener following our bee money simple guide. They are all highly overpriced.

ALCON is one company that motivated me to investigate. With a 43-billion-dollar market cap and just 620 million in free cash flow, it didn’t make sense. It’s comparable to investing in real estate and receiving a 1.5% return.

I looked at the other publicly traded companies in the space and found none worth investigating in a deeper way.

I will keep watching ALCON should its valuation return to common sense and review its financials quarterly.

Speaking of over-valued, I recently received information that a class C rental apartment building in Ontario just sold for the astonishing cap rate of 3.9%. In previous newsletters, you learned of the horrible guidelines in Ontario, which state that tenants can live rent-free for years before cases are brought before the rent review board.

I have no idea who or why someone would purchase a building at that price in one of the worst environments in Canada.

Finally, in Ontario, the local Municipality announced that they were raising property taxes above 9% for the coming year. There were many excuses, but they agreed with the Administration running our Municipality. Given their incompetence and self-serving policies directed by the Administration, I’m unsure why we even have elected officials.

Politicians like to blame the private sector for the housing crisis. Frankly, even if you can buy a house, property taxes are the next or second mortgage that will never be paid down. Soon, no one can afford to live in a home, let alone buy one.

When will we say ENOUGH?
