Homes for Less than $250,000

Yes, there are many and here is how to find them

I’m always amazed when I suggest that numerous homes can be purchased for $250,000 or less, and people laugh. Usually, those who laugh live in Ontario or some other province other than the East Coast. There are many homes in Atlantic Canada that can be purchased for that price.

In some cases, even rental properties. You can start an investment portfolio for less than $250,000 in several cities. So, I always wonder why someone in Toronto would pay thousands of dollars for a rental when, for a fraction of that, they could own a property in Nova Scotia, for example.

The quality of life cannot be matched. Nova Scotia has the cleanest air and environmental practices in Canada. Rural high-speed internet is available in most towns, cities, and rural areas. If not, Elon Musk has a solution so that even on an island, you can work or enjoy high-speed internet.

The cost of living is also much less than in most Ontario or West Coast communities. Fresh fish is still available for under $5 a pound, and many local farmers' markets make food very affordable. Gardens are also an option, as most homes come with extra large lots.

Steps to take:

1. Travel out east and visit for a few weeks to get used to the weather. December to March are good times to view the “nasty” weather periods. Are they that much tougher than Toronto, London or Edmonton?

2. When you choose to move, you can rent a home or buy before you move. Many options exist. Make sure you work with a trusted real estate professional before making offers.

3. Act. Get off the couch and start rolling up your sleeves. Set a timeline for moving. Rent to start but look to purchase a home for under $250,000.

If you think back to your ancestral roots, your relatives likely left some part of the world and moved to Canada or the United States because they thought it would be better opportunities for their families. Many, like my parents, couldn’t speak English and were only allowed into Canada because they had some skills (my dad was a greenhouse man) that the country needed.

Does moving from Toronto to Nova Scotia seem like such a hardship now?
