I Don't Think I'm Helping You
You get What You Pay For
Of the 1,500 subscribers to this newsletter, 300 or so read it weekly. I’m told that’s the average for most newsletters, but something doesn’t seem right.
I don’t think many 300 who read this think of what I’m talking about. You may be one of those. I don’t expect you to change anything in your investment life; consider the possibility. I aimed to start this and get people to think about investing differently. Maybe not change much; just at least consider the possibility. I’ve been lucky in my investment life and also wanted you to experience that.
But I think I’ve failed.
I talk about it in detail in today’s podcast. Here is a summary, but I suggest you listen to the podcast if you want all the details.
1. Most free podcasts or newsletters on money matters are trash, and this could be one of those.
2. Unless you have some form of stake, you likely don’t consider any topics or strategies presented here. If you get it for free, it has no perceived value. You get what you pay for.
3. Listening to free advice can lead to inaction as you continue to mistrust those giving it. “What’s really in it for them, and why would they do this for free?” You somehow are diluted to believe that listening to advice repeatedly without acting is helpful.
4. My experience in providing free mental health services to those who can’t afford it taught me that without any form of payment, 50% didn’t arrive for an appointment, and those who came did not value the service.
5. Sometime in January, this newsletter and podcast will become a premium service accessible only to those who see the value and pay for it.
6. I expect 99.9% of you not to subscribe. I'm grateful that I’ve been able to write these so that long after I’m gone, my grandchildren can find an answer to a money question they may have. That motivated this free newsletter and the podcast I shared with you. But it’s time to change.
7. In this New Year of 2025, I will change some things by acting immediately. This is one of those.
