One Investment You Have to Make Today
Even Warren Buffet would Agree
I hit 68 this past summer, an age I didn’t think would mean much. It’s just another day, not necessarily a birthday, and nothing has changed. But it’s getting obvious that I’m into the 4th quarter of football, 9th inning of baseball, or late in the third period of life if you are a hockey fan.
This newsletter about investing has not shared the most important investment you need to make, as I did some 8 years ago. Without health, we have nothing.
Being in pain all day or taking a load of medications to function isn’t a great way to live. You can have all the money you can imagine; it won’t matter unless you invest in your health.
When I went into AFIB some five and a half years ago, things got a bit scary. I rushed to the hospital, and a skilled ER physician told me they were going to kill me and then bring me back to life with electrical panels. There were risks, she said, and the odd time, for whatever reason, they can’t get people back. You die right there.
I was lucky. A great pre-ambulance pickup professional came to the house in the middle of the night and hooked me up, telling the ambulance it was on its way and what was happening. They then came, picked me up, and told the ER what was happening so they were ready. They killed me and brought me back, and (touch wood) it’s been great since.
I started investing in my health three years before the AFIB, but that event jump-started me into even more work. I invest about one hour a day, six days a week, into exercise. Here is my investment plan. Yours will likely be very different; I’m just suggesting that you get a plan started regardless of your age.
1. 1 hour of exercise a day: 3 days a week, weight training plus cardio, 3 days just cardio. I also do some stretching now.
2. Two 18-hour fasts, twice a week, are recommended to prevent cancer and give the body regular re-makes for fighting bad cells and disease. Watch sugar spikes.
3. Active meditation. Work with bees or sit in nature for 60 minutes or more as often as possible, up to seven days a week, weather permitting.
4. Remove toxic people from my life. Other than family, I have only a few friends, which is perfect.
5. Be mindful that we all have 86,400 seconds each day. When entering a timed task, I ask, “Is this a way I want to burn some precious seconds?” I say no a lot.
6. Love. Hate is a bad emotion, and envy is even more destructive. Loving those who matter, loving the environment, and loving the natural inner beauty of all humans is very helpful.
This week's expert stated that if you work at it and invest in your health, you can continue improving it until age 85 or more. It’s not about our age but what investments we are making in our health. That’s exciting news, especially for this old guy.
