Two Strategies to Get The Most Out of Today

Got 5 Minutes?

Ok, that’s a bold statement. What on earth do I know? I’d agree not very much, but on a few topics,  perhaps a bit more than a coin flip is worth.

Psychology has taught us that writers, painters, and entrepreneurs have particular rituals that work for them. The book Daily Rituals makes it obvious that a daily routine is necessary to be one's best.

While the rituals discussed in the book vary greatly, science, business, and traditional psychology tell us that two very important actions, which you can take daily, are needed to be at your best.

Here they are.

1. The first task you must do each morning after getting up, is 5 minutes or more of exercise. It puts you in the mindset of success to realize that you are on your way to a great day. The exercise that someday you may get up to 30 or even 40 minutes a day will send a rush of positive blood to your brain, encouraging the development of over 100% more brain cells than if you didn’t exercise at all. So you get the psychological and neurological boost to start your day. I do this 6 days a week. I still hate doing it, but it must be part of my daily ritual. This short video tells you more about brain health from exercise.

2. Grab a small lined blank paged book to write your daily tasks after your exercise each day. My first is exercise, that I can check off to show to myself that accomplishment. Next, I write the tasks I need to accomplish to help me chisel away at my long-term goals. If writing a book I would put, “to write five pages today”. Each day, I may have from 3 to 10 tasks to complete. If I don’t finish all of them, they carry over to the next day, but I make sure that rarely happens. I also add tasks throughout the day as needed. It keeps me structured and focused on what needs to be done today.

These two behaviors need to start happening immediately. They are based on science, common sense, and various studies of thousands of successful artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and athletes. It is also doubly important to start such routines if you are in the Retire Young phase of life. Even these two simple strategies will add structure to your life and meaning again.

When starting to exercise, ensure you have clearance from your Doctor if you haven’t exercised in a while.

I’m currently using a book to write my daily tasks, which I received for free from a property insurance company. Implementing these two strategies will take a bit of time but no money.
